Tennessean story about Lakewood zoning map

Lakewood, TN

The City of Lakewood has purchased 62 acres of Park Land

The Lakewood City Commission voted 4-1 to buy 62 acres of land for 125,000 dollars. This property has been the subject of much debate as developers attempted to build houses in the 100-year flood plain. The Branch Bank and Trust Company in Louisville Kentucky owns this land and has asked as much as 800,000 dollars for it.

Most of this land is inside the city limits of Lakewood with some in Metro. The Metro Greenway Trail planned along the Cumberland River will run through this property.

There were three reasons the Commissioners discussed for buying this land. One, it would guarantee no more houses could be built in the 100-year flood plain. Two, the land would make an excellent park and nature preserve. Three, the State of Tennessee owns 22 acres of land adjacent to this and is willing to transfer ownership to the City of Lakewood. The City could have an 85-acre park.

The Lakewood water supply is safe and abundant.

We do not get our water from Metro Nashville. Old Hickory Water Utility supplies the water here and those tanks are above the dam.

FEMA Contact Information

According to the FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer, Gracia Szczech, once registered, it takes an average of 2-5 days to have an inspector come out and survey the damaged property. It is taking an average of 7-10 days for the whole process to take place, from registration to payment. The payment of the grant money will go quicker if the individual provides his checking account, allowing the money to be directly deposited.
